What to wear on a road trip
Every time I embark on a road trip, I am always wondering what to wear to look attractive and yet feel comfortable while spending long hours sitting in the car. Even when traveling and doing many other things.
But then comes the packing part, where it’s difficult to know what I’m going to bring so as to mix both of them! It is often a challenge to combine fashion with comfort. So we’ve come up with this awesome guide for you about what you can wear during your road trip without forsaking any of these two!
What should you wear on a road trip?
Road trips are interesting and exciting to go on, but they can also be irritating if one is not comfortable or feels itchy most of the time, and this may spoil your whole experience.
One of my primary concerns when I pack for a journey is how comfortable I can be in the clothes. Especially on long drives, you do not want to feel stuck in jeans or have itchy clothes as the temperature rises a bit.
I love packing trendy clothes that are also comfy. Keep your outfits simple. Put on loose-fit shirts or tanks. Wear stretchable tights or leggings that are both enchanting and painless. Get dressed in clothing that you like, but you will know you won’t take it off once discomfort sets in while remaining stylish enough for comfort purposes.
What you shouldn’t wear on a road trip
How it goes all hinges upon your mood. But, in my opinion, skinny jeans are not something to think about. This is especially true if you will be spending a lot of time sitting in your automobile.
Yes, by all means, put some in your bag, but should you decide to go out and about in town rather than driving there directly, better still.
You might consider packing high-heeled shoes as well if absolutely necessary, but it’s probably best just to have comfortable shoes for driving and even walking on your explorations.
Don’t pack clothes that feel uncomfortable or that you think won’t fit properly. And anyway, they’ll just wind up at the bottom of your bag. Pack lightweight items that will help you feel comfortable no matter what situation arises
Do you really need to bring the cutest outfits?
Who said you can’t look cute and fashionable in comfortable clothing? You don’t have to bring all the latest trends while on the road.
You can definitely pack some good-looking clothes, but don’t forget to consider the fact that you will be sitting and driving in the car for a while. Make it something enjoyable instead of getting stuck in your trendy clothing.
You can also change yourself into something more glamorous once you get there. You can stop by your hotel and freshen up and change into something awesome-looking before heading out, and you could even stop by a rest area before getting there to change too.
Where are you going?
Considering the location of your destination is another thing to think about when deciding what to wear during a road trip. What exactly will you be doing?
If you are not thinking of getting out, or maybe you are going on a camping and hiking road trip, do not carry along extra clothes that you will never put on just in case. Maybe one outfit for that, but keep in mind where you’re going and bring comfortable clothes for that.
When planning your day’s outfit, always remember the activities of the day. These may even include stopovers. Keep close to those clothes that must be worn immediately after leaving your accommodation early in the morning. If, at some stage, you have plans to visit the beach, make sure your swimsuit can be easily accessed. Also keep that in mind when thinking about what kinds of outfits you might want to pack in your suitcase for your road trip.
Bring layers, layers, and more layers
Layering is a key element of your packing. If you are planning to do some car camping, sleeping in your van, camping in your tent, and even hiking or walking around a city, it’s always a good idea to have layers handy.
Layers aren’t only good for the weather but also for your time in the car. Wear layers that are easily removable. Usually, mornings are a bit more chilly. Start your days with more layers, and as the day advances, remove the layers that are now too warm. Same for the evening; have your layers handy so you can add to your outfit.
While sleeping outdoors, you’ll probably have chillier nights. Keep some layers near you so you can easily add on to your sleeping attire in case you get cold during the night. Layers are important to pack if you don’t want to be cold.
Outerwear to consider
Remember earlier when I told you all about knowing where you are going and what to expect? This will come in handy when you’re packing your clothes.
When traveling somewhere that may have some cooler conditions, remember to bring the right clothing. Pack a winter jacket, gloves, scarves, hats, and even boots if there is any chance of cold weather.
Summer Travels: Don’t forget a hat to shield yourself from the sun. If you are anticipating it raining, pack a light raincoat even though there isn’t any forecast of rain.
There are two suggestions for you.
- Columbia Arcadia Jacket
- Helly Hansen Winter Jacket
- Billabong Hat
What to pack for shoes on your road trip
Shoes are an imperative inclusion in your driver’s kit. However, remember to pack clothes that are cosy while not forgetting comfortable shoes.
As for me, I am aware that during road trips, a majority of people walk a lot. In order to avoid blisters or having foot pain at the end of the day, you need to be comfortable.
Meanwhile, there are cute pairs you can get that are also comfy! Thus, don’t go for cuteness when it’s about the comfortability of your feet!
For example, I have some great recommendations that I have personally tried out over the years and loved. So make sure you click on my different links so you can try them out for yourself and see how they are life changers!
Sneakers
Walking sandals for travel
For sure, flip-flops are the kind of shoes you must carry while on a road trip. You’ll need a comfortable pair to have on whenever it is hot enough to allow you to show your toes and too hot to put on tennis shoes.
Don’t go hiking or walking around town wearing your flip-flops. Instead, choose one that’s cute but still supports your foot, so you can feel like you are in a good pair of walking shoes. Another advantage of sandals is that they permit greater air circulation for the feet.
Some good options for you would be these sandals, which are both supportive and cute.

- Cushionaire Luna Cork
- Volcom New School Flip Flop
Slip-Ons and flip-flops
Your wardrobe must have slip-ons or flip-flops. Although these types of shoes may not be used when conducting some exploration, they can serve myriad purposes during your journey.
They are nice to put on while going for a pee break on the way, pay for your petrol or pick something from the shop. You can also bring cute ballet flats to dress up an outfit with. Flip-flops can be worn at the beach and used as a change of footwear in public showers, like those found in campgrounds. They are best to put on if you are not walking much.

Forget your heels
When you travel, it’s usually not necessary to have a pair of high heels unless you are attending a wedding. Don’t leave your boots behind and lose some space instead. Choose some comfortable shoes, sandals, or even slip-on shoes instead. Your feet will be grateful.
If you are on a road trip or just traveling around, you will most likely have to move a lot in order to make the most of every sightseeing opportunity. Can you walk 18 km daily with heels? We walked about 18 km each day during our road trip through Scotland, and my feet were killing me by the end of the day, even with good shoes on! That is why good shoes are a must-have, while heels should be left at home.
What to pack for pants on your road trip
Leggings and Jeggings
Certainly, leggings or jeggings over jeans! These are the perfect road trip pants. It’s possible to wear a nice pair of leggings with anything in your wardrobe, and you’re going to feel great wearing them. A simple black pair of leggings can be worn with practically any other outfit.
Jeggings are genius. I have a few pairs that resemble a pair of jeans, yet they are actually jeggings. They will look exactly as if you were wearing some denim jeans, but with the advantages of a pair of leggings. Who wouldn’t like that? During the summer, one should also style up in their favorite shorts.
Don’t bring tight and itchy clothing. Opting for more relaxed and convenient attire allows you to enjoy free movement. It also helps avoid itchy clothes or those that feel tight at times.
During the summer, specifically, I realize there could be more humidity in the air, making tight clothing even tighter. I cannot speak for wherever you stay, but here in Quebec, the humidity can be insane at times.
This will make it easier for you to move around and prevent you from feeling trapped inside your own clothes.
What to pack for shirts on your road trip
T-shirts
Don’t forget to bring a few t-shirts along. A great option is to pack some light and loose T-shirts that will make you feel at ease. Shirts that are too tight should not be carried in your luggage. On hot days, looser shirts allow the body to breathe.
A looser t-shirt would also be much more comfortable than being trapped in something too tight. Ensure you pack some insulated shirts as well for when it gets colder or if it’s cold at night. These would be the only body-hugging tops I would carry with myself, though

Tank Tops
We love our tank tops on hot days, for beach time, or simply to get comfortable somewhere. You can have a couple of them in your bag to change into when the need arises. I prefer looser tank tops so I can wear either a sports bra or a pretty bralette beneath. It is very easy to pair them with almost anything, and it may also work for an evening out.
When you’re driving and it becomes terribly hot in the car, wearing a comfy tank top will make you feel great, plus you’ll enjoy the warmth more whilst driving because you won’t feel overly hot.

Jackets
When you plan for a trip, it could be necessary to pack jackets, depending on where you are going. Consider the location and what you will need there. For your trip, make sure you have a rain jacket, winter coat, soft shell jacket and stylish cover-up when nights get cold.
Don’t leave behind any kind of jacket that is required by you.

- Helly Hansen Winter Jacket
- ZSHOW Outerwear Vest
- The North Face Apex Bionic Softshell Jacket
- Levi’s Cotton Hooded Anorak Jacket
- Columbia Chatfield Hill Winter Jacket
Cardigans and sweaters
To be on the safe side, some cardigans or sweaters are indispensable. They will be useful when it is not so cold to wear a coat but colder than normal. It can get cooler later in the evening and you may want to put on a sweater.
You can come with all types of sweaters anyway. Just pick one that you like and feel comfortable wearing. You could also pack some cute ones for going out that save you from having to put on some kind of kangaroo-like sweater

What to pack for dresses for your road trip
Dresses are one of the best ways to combine comfort and cuteness. In this case too, you need to wear clothes that are comfortable instead of those that look like you are about to compete for Miss World title.
Select a few dresses that do not wrinkle easily. You will hardly pack a steamer when traveling, so your clothes crumples may remain there. Opt for dresses with less defined shape or avoid tight-fitting ones. A few could be somewhat tailored but never close fit
