10 Ways to Style a Denim Jacket
Still in my memory is my first denim jacket. I used to wear this classic mid-blue shirt with pink shorts and a pink and white striped t-shirt. This “classic” item of apparel, the transitional weight jacket, has always appealed to me as it somehow makes even the most formal outfits feel simple. Tulle and Taffeta? Wear jeans to help tone down everything. Basically informal. Denim jacket style: how should one approach it?
Given my recent Instagram series in which I style a single item in 10 various ways, I thought I would preserve those looks here and go into more thorough discussion on the styling ideas I used. Basically, if we haven’t already, we should befriend the items we already possess. Given it forms part of the recipe for reaching clothing nirvana.
For me, I search a denim jacket for a few particular features. My longer torso makes me a sucker for designs that lie somewhat below the hip. Hard denim will still work, but the style has to be somewhat large to offset the lack of softness of the denim. And I’d like a medium blue, not very aged or faded. Nothing disturbing. Every button design will function. A straight hemline is OK as long as it meets my other criteria; nevertheless, because a curved hemline creates a softer profile, it is recommended. One seen here is Ceres Life; it is sold out but still loved.
With my normally neutral wardrobe, I decided to center the jacket as the major item, save from the blue monochromatic combo. You could just tweak these proportions using a more vibrant color palette. Alternatively, you may swap out the blue denim jacket with one you already own—black or white.
Looking back at the outfits I put together, I see I usually went for higher necklines. When you stop to consider it, the biggest draw of the jacket is clearly the crew neckline tops.
Probably my fave double-denim outfit is this one. Wear it alternatively with white jeans to accentuate the blue even more. Double denim should, in my view, be aimed at closely matching the color of the jacket to the jeans. Though it’s not required, a perfect match does seem much more intentional. Denim jacket style: how to style one?
Here’s how you may tone down the formality of dressier pieces in your collection with a denim jacket. It gives heels and long skirts the appropriate friction, which increases their “chill.”
Finally, you may play around extensively with the style. Button double denim from the collar or split the hue with a contrasting top to create a monochromatic moment. Treat it like a shirt or a jacket. Throw a sweatshirt over the top to make even another layered piece.
Remodeling your wardrobe will help you to see a clear line before we explore the styles. variants on the styles you find most appealing—a result of playing around with your current clothes.
